Is Rheumatoid Arthritis Common?

One of the most common types of arthritis is referred to as rheumatoid arthritis. Many people may experience symptoms of this condition in the feet and are aware of the pain and discomfort that typically exists with this ailment. There are specific symptoms that may accompany this type of arthritis, including swelling and soreness in the feet, difficulty waking, which may be a result of unstable joints, or the foot possibly changing shape. Research has shown the part of the foot that may be affected the most are the toes, which consist of smaller joints. They may begin to look deformed and may have difficulty in moving or bending. There may be additional foot conditions that may arise including the development of corns and calluses. This may be a result of changes in the foot shape. If you are afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis, it is suggested to consult with a podiatrist who can offer proper treatment techniques.

Because RA affects more than just your joints, including the joints in your feet and ankles, it is important to seek early diagnosis from your podiatrist if you feel like the pain in your feet might be caused by RA. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Westland Foot & Ankle Specialists, P.C.. Our doctors will assist you with all of your podiatric concerns.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur, causing severe pain and immobility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain in the feet
  • Stiffness in the feet
  • Pain on the ball or sole of feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.

There are many professions where it is necessary to stand for the majority of the day. People who are employed as nurses may be standing and walking, while performing the necessary functions to take proper care of their patients. Research has shown the importance of stretching the feet, which may promote improved circulation. When the shoes are changed frequently or the correct insoles are worn, the feet will feel more comfortable. Practicing yoga has been known to stretch the muscles, toes, and tendons in the feet. This may also develop additional flexibility. If you are in a profession where you are walking most of the day, please speak to a podiatrist about proper stretching techniques, which may prevent painful foot conditions from developing.

Causes of Poor Circulation

Research has shown there are many people that may experience poor circulation in their feet. Some of the symptoms that may be associated with this ailment may be muscle cramps, feeling a tingling or numbing sensation, or possible sharp pains that may be felt in the feet. A condition that is referred to as peripheral artery disease, also known as PAD, may be a common cause of poor circulation. This typically causes the arteries to become narrow, which may result in nerve damage. Obesity may be an additional reason why poor circulation may occur. The feet must endure additional weight, which may lead to difficulty in exercising, and this may contribute to poor circulation. It’s important to speak with a podiatrist if you feel you are afflicted with poor circulation in the feet.

Poor circulation is a serious condition and needs immediate medical attention. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact one of our podiatrists of Dr. Kane & Associates, P.C. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs is can be caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the result of a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Plaque buildup or atherosclerosis results from excess calcium and cholesterol in the bloodstream. This can restrict the amount of blood which can flow through the arteries. Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs are sometimes caused by inflammation in the blood vessels, known as vasculitis.

Causes

Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development. It can also cause:

  • Muscle pain, stiffness, or weakness
  • Numbness or cramping in the legs
  • Skin discoloration
  • Slower nail & hair growth
  • Erectile dysfunction

Those who have diabetes or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, as are those who are over 50. If you have poor circulation in the feet and legs it may be caused by PAD and is important to make changes to your lifestyle in order to reduce risk of getting a heart attack or stroke. Exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will dramatically improve conditions.

As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.

There Are Two Forms of Shock Wave Therapy

A form of therapy that is referred to as extracorporeal shock wave therapy, which is also known as ESWT, may possibly aid in helping patients with pain associated with tendons. People who experience plantar fasciitis may benefit from this type of treatment. It may promote healing and this may reduce some of the pain and discomfort that is typically associated with this condition. There are generally two forms of this type of treatment. One is referred to as a high-energy shock wave treatment, often including the therapy to be performed in one session. Some patients experience severe pain if this procedure is chosen, and may be administered anesthesia. Low-energy shock wave treatments may consist of being given in three or more sessions and typically causes mild or no pain. If you are experiencing tendon ailments, please speak with a podiatrist if you would like information about shock wave therapy.

Shockwave therapy is a treatment commonly used to treat various injuries and conditions, particularly plantar fasciitis in the feet. To learn more, consult with one of our podiatrists from Westland Foot & Ankle Specialists, P.C.. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a new treatment option designed to treat bone conditions such as tennis elbow, shoulder pain, and others. Shockwave therapy uses high intensity sound waves that are directed to the affected tissues of the body with pinpoint accuracy. The effects are very beneficial, leading to a production of collagen fibers, eliminating inflammation.

Who Benefits from Shockwave?

Shockwave is recommended for patients suffering from heel pain and associated problems. Heel pain is a common condition which can be caused by obesity, overexertion, and spending a substantial amount of time on hard floors with your feet exposed and unsupported.

Fast and Easy

The therapy is actually a simple process that can leave patients feeling better the very next day. Shockwave therapy is not as dramatic as it sounds. It enables more blood flow to effected areas, addressing the source of the problem and allowing treatment to last for a long time.

Treatment & Recovery Time

Shockwave treatment will enable your feet to recover quickly. This is especially important since surgery is not required. It is cost effective and does not require the use of anesthesia. This treatment is a better option to surgery, since it is proven safe.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Westland, MI. . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.
